Calgary’s Best Breakfast Spots

Going out for breakfast always feels like such a treat, even if you’re just going for something basic there’s nothing like hot buttered toast and endless cups of coffee that you don’t actually have to make yourself. Whether you prefer a big plate of bacon and eggs, or something more refined, there are plenty of excellent places to eat at when you’re staying in Calgary. Here’s a round-up of some of Calgary’s Best Breakfast Spots:

The Beltliner. This modern-diner serves up wholesome organic and locally sourced food. They’ve got the standard breakfast dishes done right, but also plenty of delicious Southern fare such as biscuits and gravy, chicken fried steak, hush puppies, and fried pickles. If that’s a bit too much for you to work on first thing in the morning, they also have a healthy section on the menu offering house-made granola and steel-cut oatmeal etc.

Blue Star Diner. You may have to line up to get in at weekends, but it is so worth it. Working with local farmers to serve up organic fare, the food here is excellent. On the Classics part of the menu you’ll find items like Chipotle Pulled Pork Hash, and the Triple Double which has three local farm-fresh eggs and two kinds of locally made sausage (as well as hash browns and toast), but there are also Bennies, and Burritos, and a whole Breakfast Cocktail section too.

River Cafe. If you’re looking for a more high-brow place to grab brunch, then the River Cafe is pretty classy and the food is great. Again, this place is committed to sourcing local ingredients and using organic. If you like the idea of Eggs Benedict with Smoked Trout or Bison Bacon, or Sprouted Lentil Fritters, then this place is for you. (Reservations are recommended.)

Pfanntastic Pannenkoek Haus. If you love authentic Dutch pancakes loaded up and topped with yummy fillings, then this place is the real deal (and pretty unique). Their best seller is the Potato, Onion, Bacon and Cheese Pannenkoek, but you could also go full on Black Forest Pannenkoek, which comes complete with cherry liquor in the filling. There are dozens of sweet and savoury options, and you can just make up your own special pannenkoek using a long list of available ingredients.

Holy Grill. Serving up good food fast, Holy Grill has been featured on You Gotta Eat Here and is known for big tasty portions. With a selection of great sandwiches, bennies, and breakfast staples, eating here will always start your day off right.
